Dirac Compression Technology
Dirac is a unique compression technology designed to suit most application from Internet video streaming, SDTV, HDTV, 3G transmission and Electronic cinema.
Unlike Mpeg, Dirac do not use traditional Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) but rather a wavelets base compression technology that thanks to the latest chip technology produces better results in motion compensation and hugely improved compression.
In Collaboration with the BBC, Numedia Technology has produced unique hardware in the form of Encoder and Decoder based on VC-2 which is Dirac Pro technology as proposed to the SMPTE.This technology was designed to meet some of the emerging challenges facing most broadcasters in the distribution of high frame-rate progressive signals that requires twice the bandwidth of conventional HD.
Dirac Pro offers a unique solution because not only it solves the bandwidth problem by compressing the high frame rate progressive images into the same existing HD bandwidth but the program stream is also fully backwards compatible with existing HD equipment hence allowing dual 3G SDI Islands to be connected between sites over existing links
through television stations & outlying regions without needing to revamp the entire infrastructure.
